When you visit our store, we want you to be absolutely happy with your shopping experience, your purchases and the service we provide.

We promise to treat you with fairness and honesty, to listen to your requests with an open mind, and explore solutions that will help you achieve the cycling experience you desire.

FAQ’s

GENERAL

  • Yes we are! Our hours are here. Additional times are available by appointment.

  • During peak season (March-August), we request appointment for all repairs other than a simple flat fix on non-electric bikes.

    Appointments are recommended throughout the year for major repairs, custom projects and shopping for specialty bikes, such as Bromptons, recumbents, cargo bikes and e-bikes.

  • Since we can’t always get to the phone during busy times, we recommend sending a text to 773-930-4076. We monitor this frequently and usually respond the same day.

BUYING A BIKE

  • We specialize in alternative transportation, and we carry Brompton folding bikes, recumbent trikes and two-wheelers, cargo bikes, electric bikes and a curated selection of quality commuter and adventure bikes.

  • Our online catalog is a representation of the range of options available from our vendors. We do our best to keep popular demo models in stock. Please contact us with specific inquiries.

  • Any stock or demo bike in our store can be taken out for a test ride. There’s a city park across the street for us that is perfect for test rides. We will hold your government issued ID while you ride, and request that you wear a helmet.

  • We carry a selection of bikes available for immediate purchase, Including standard adult bikes, kids’ bikes and Brompton folding bikes.
    Most other bikes will be ordered specifically for you.

    • Arrange to test ride our demo bikes

    • Put down a deposit on the bike you want

    • We order the bike, and set it up for you upon arrival

    • We notify you when the bike is ready for pick up (or you can arrange for delivery in greater Chicago area)

  • If it is a brand or model we don’t carry, we can check to see if it can be brought in by special order.
    If it is a custom bike from one of the brands we represent, we will work with you very thoroughly to determine the sizing, components and options, and provide you with a complete firm quote before submitting your order. Custom orders are non-refundable.

  • Bike warranties against defects in materials and workmanship come come from individual manufacturers, and vary widely. Please consult your Owner’s Manual or the manufacturer’s website for details.

    We include a service package free of charge with any new bicycle purchased at Cosmic Bikes.

PAYMENT

  • We accept cash, all major credit & debit cards and electronic payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.).

    For remote payments, we can bill you via PayPal or Stripe.

    Personal chacks are accepted on special orders strictly at our own discretion.

  • At this time we do not offer any consumer financing.

  • A bicycle purchase represents a significant investment that is not to be taken frivolously. We promise to work with you before you make a decision to purchase, to ensure that you end up with a solution that fulfills your expectations. However, we understand that things don’t always go as planned.

    Custom bikes, and bikes with significant alterations, modifications and accessories are non-refundable.

    Stock bicycles in new condition may be considered for a refund within 7 days, or for exchange/store credit within 30 days of purchase. Any return will be accepted solely at Cosmic Bikes’ discretion.

    Refunds will be given promptly in the following manner:

    • Credit card payments are refunded to the account you used to make the original purchase

    • For a cash purchase over $50, we will issue a refund by check.

    • Regardless of the original form of payment, we are always happy to issue your refund in the form of store credit.

  • Accessories and other general merchandise in unused condition and with original packaging may be considered for a refund or exchange within 30 days. We cannot offer refunds on installed parts/accessories or clearance sale merchandise. Any return will be accepted solely at Cosmic Bikes’ discretion.

    Refunds will be given promptly in the following manner:

    • Credit card payments are refunded to the account you used to make the original purchase

    • For a cash purchase of $50 or less, cash refund will be given.

    • For cash purchases over $50, we will issue a refund by check.

    • Regardless of the original form of payment, we are always happy to issue your refund in the form of store credit.

SERVICE

  • We require appointments for most tune-ups and services during our busy season, typically between March and August (more here).
    Based on our workload, We can sometimes accommodate minor emergency repairs while you wait, including flat fixes on non-motorized wheels, simple brake and gear adjustments, etc.

  • We cannot offer estimates online or over the phone, however when you come in with your bike, you will receive a complete estimate for your approval, including labor, parts and time-frame for completion, before we proceed with any repairs.

  • We stock a wide range of common inner tube sizes for adult bikes and kids’ bikes, and less common sizes for recumbents, folding bikes and much more.
    In the rare event that we do not have the size you need, we can order it within 2-3 days.

  • We offer comprehensive services on all e-bikes that were purchased from our store.
    We may be able (at our discretion) to address mechanical issues on e-bikes purchased elsewhere.
    We cannot work on e-bikes made by companies that do not offer US-based technical support.

  • YES!!

  • Our goal is to ensure you are happy with services you purchase from us. We’ll make sure that we understand your expectations, and that our recommendations match them.

    All of our major services come with 30-120 day labor guarantees. Bring your bike in within the period of time covered by the guarantee, and we will perform any needed adjustments or corrections on the work that was done, free of charge.

SHOPPING

  • We stock a wide range of accessories including helmets, locks, lights, racks, bags, fenders, baby seats, bike tools and much more.

  • We do not carry cycling apparel at this time.

  • Absolutely! We have relationships with hundreds of vendors, and can special order items we don’t stock, usually within one week or less.

OTHER

  • On most bicycles and accessories, we adhere to the Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). In some cases, our prices may be higher to reflect the amount of labor needed to make a particular bicycle ready and safe for use.

    Our new bicycle assembly and the maintenance package, included with each new bike we sell, are of the highest quality available in the city. Only a handful of shops offer a comparable level of service, and we know who they are.

    Therefore, we can't promise you that we will be able to match the price on any bike that appears identical. But we can promise that the $10-50 you are likely to save by choosing a discounted bike will be more than offset in your first few weeks of riding by better performing and more durable product.

    It is not not possible for us to match aggressively discounted internet prices while running a sustainable neighborhood-based business. We will make every attempt to offer you the best value for your money, but we must do so in a manner that preserves our ability to fairly compensate our employees, and pay our landlord and vendors.

  • We offer Chicago area delivery on a range of specialty bikes purchased from us. We may also be able to arrange the pickup of your bike for service. Please contact us to discuss.

  • We can ship most accessories and folding bikes within the contiguous US.
    If you want to discuss shipping a new bike or packing and shipping a bike you already own, please contact us.
